Kyodo News: Quake-triggered floods submerge Miyagi residential areas

Residential areas were flooded and scores of vehicles, boats and a storage tank were washed away by tsunami following powerful earthquakes that hit a wide area in Miyagi Prefecture and other areas in northeastern Japan.

There is information that bridges have collapsed in Saitama and Iwate prefectures, while the industry ministry received no immediate reports of abnormalities at nuclear plants in the areas hit by the quake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.4.
TV footage showed quake-triggered tsunami causing the Natori River to swell in spots near its mouth and overflowing water from the river submerged a number of houses and buildings in residential areas nearby.
About 20 motor vehicles were floating in the sea off Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, on the Pacific, police said.
Fire authorities in Miyagi's Kesennuma said a number of buildings, including houses, have been seriously damaged by the quake.
Narita airport, one of Japan's busiest gateways east of Tokyo, was closed and passengers and visitors were evacuated from the buildings. Haneda airport did not use two of its four runways.
There are no immediate reports of shinkansen bullet trains derailing, which are operated by East Japan Railway Co. in the northeastern region of Tohoku.
